Hawaiian Halloween (EP) review By Spud "The Square" Spikowski

Released October 1, 2020 on Surf Asylum Records,  the "Hawaiian Halloween" (EP) is the first of 3 EPs in the so called "Dick Dale Trilogy" or "The Last Silver Whammy Bar" storyline arc of Beachfront Vinny's ongoing quest to become the next king of the surf guitar. It is composed of 6 tracks that are equally split between music singles and spoken word comedy with one following the other starting with comedy, "The Death of Dick Dale."

Los Lunes al Rock - Dick Dale - Costa Oeste Surf & Rock
Dick Dale was Beachfront Vinny's surf guitar mentor

In this first track, a strange old man appears at The Surf Spot which we learn is the high tech recording studio owned and operated by Long Island surf guitarist Beachfront Vinny.  We also learn that Vinny was the last surf guitar student and favorite pupil of Dick Dale, the original King of the Surf Guitar. From beyond the grave, Dick Dale delivers his 'last silver whammy bar" to Beachfront Vinny and warns of a secret plot by music purists and the High Surf Council Association to claim that Vinny would not be the rightful person entitled to be called "The Next King of The Surf Guitar. Track 2 is music, "Alice Cooper's Nightmare on Surf Street" and it features the man himself.

The track is a surf-rap parody of "A Nightmare on Surf Street" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and is we learn that Vinny has been haunted by the ghost of Dick Dale ever since he received his last silver whammy bar. In track 3, I appear as the news commentator in "News Flash About the High Surf Council Association" and relay information about music purists and the High Surf Council Association 's attempts to reclaim Dick Dale's last silver whammy bar.  This results in track 4's updated surf style dance single "The Nightmare in Maui", an original tune that is a playful re-imagination of Monster Mash. The old man returns to the Surf Spot in track 5's "The Devil and Dick Dale" where we learn that the High Surf Council Association took back Dick Dale's last silver whammy bar. The ghost of Dick Dale returns and reminds Beachfront Vinny to "use the twang", and that the surf music was inside of him the whole time. The beautiful final track is it's result, "Candy Man", a Hawaiian ukulele surf guitar beach boys tune that parodies several songs and genres in one giant trop rock mashup.
